E wEEk

Monday:
Library day! We got a surprising amount of books. I was expecting like 4 books because I could only come up with a few topics starting with E, but we found quite a few. We decided that the Elevator at the library starts with E and so we rode it up and down 3-ish times.

We read: Clemence and His Noisy Little Fire Engine by Jessica Spanyol (weird)
The Elevator Man by Stanley Trachtenberg
Eloise by Kay Thompson

Tuesday:
We meet Javin's friend Helene and her mother at the zoo to see the Elephants - we talked about which one was bigger and how they use their trunks. Javin wanted to take the picture, not be in it, so he took this:

Javin chose the Bald Eagle as the animal to ride on the carousel, I didn't even have to suggest an E animal!
We read: Rose & the Bald-Headed Elephant by Wooley Cottswold (weird)
Ronnie the Rhino and the Grumpy Old Elephant by Hector Garcia, Jr (weird)
Monkey & Elephant's Worst Fight Ever by Michael Townsend (LOVED)
What Elephant by Genevieve Cote
Elephant in the Bathtub by Kristina Andres
The Big Elephant in the Room by Lane Smith
Never Mail an Elephant by Mike Thaler (Cute)
Elephant Soup by Ingrid & Dieter Schubert (Cute)
Are these the cutest things EVER?!
Wednesday:
Egg Day - We ate tortilla and cheese for breakfast, which doesn't have an E in it, but inside the tortilla is scrambles Egg and cheese; its one of Javin favorites (Jaron got him hooked at a young age).

I also hard boiled some Eggs for Egg Salad sammies for lunch and we had a lot of Egg talk. (side note: when I asked him to help me creak the eggs for the salad he said,"No! Baby bird in there."-CUTE!)

We read: An Extraordinary Egg by Leo Lionni
The Cow that Laid an Egg by Andy Cutbill (Cute)
Bear's Eggs by Ingrid & Dieter Schubert
Roly-Poly Eggs by Kali Stileman (LOVED)
Eggday by Joyce Dunbar (Cute)

Thursday:
Eye Day - We discussed Eye color and figured out that Javin has green, daddy has blue and mommy has brown (first answer was black). We talked about how eyes make it so we can see and when someone's Eyes don't work very well they wear glasses.

Read: The Eye Book by Dr. Seuss (LOVED)
I Spy with My Little Eye by Edward Gibbs (LOVED)
My Traveling Eye by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw
Eye See it! by Scholastic Books

For our art project I had Javin name some animal bodies for me to draw and he glue-dotted googely Eyes onto them. We had a penguin, sea turtle, cat, monkey, Eagle, fox, walrus and Elephant. He did pretty good, except for the walrus looks like Sid from Ice Age. And don't judge me because of my pant-less, dirty-faced child. It was our inside day and we needed some icecream. What? Some days you need to stay in PJs all day.

Friday:
We packed a lunch and some Engine books and headed out for this little spot by the Union Pacific train tracks. We watch them move back and forth and we count train cars and talk about the artwork on them and try to decide whats in them. This day was a little different though. A random car pulled up and a guy asked me if we were lost, I informed him that we go there on occasion to watch the trains. He told us he was the Yard Director and asked if we wanted a closer look. OF COURSE! We got an up close look at the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus cars that are parked there for the week and some Engines. He also gave Javin a super cool Union Pacific light and said to call next time and maybe we can ride on one of the Engines!
Who knew they still travel by train?! I mean, it makes sense, but I just never thought about it.

The day would have been awesome to end right there, but we went and picked up a friend who needed a ride to the hospital (non-emergency). But we ended up talking about the hospital while we waited and about the Emergency room and what happens. Then my friend was super nice and got us some stuff from the gift shop for taking her the hospital - way nice and unnecessary. She got Javin a book about birds: Who am I? Birds by Son Schein Press, the Eggs in the book open so you can see what kind of bird is inside - its awesome!

We read: Runaway Engine! Thomas & Friends book
The Little Engine That Could: Gets a Checkup by Watty Piper

D Week

Monday:

We got our weekly books, Javin threw a fit about returning The Pirate Cruncher from last week. I took that time to explain that in order to get more books we have to return the once we had. I also explained that we need to take really good care of the library books (don't color, tear or stand on) so that the other kids can read nice library books to read.

No, David! by Daivd Shannon
Dot by Patricia Intriago

Tuesday:

All Aboard the Dinotrain by Deb Lund (FAVORITE)
Dinosaur VS The Potty by Bob Shea
Dinosaur VS The Library by Bob Shea
Clifford and the Dinosaurs by Norman Bridwell

We went to the Natural History Museum of Utah. If I had to use one descriptive word about it, it would be - AWESOME! Javin LOVED it; in fact, we walked through the whole things once, ate lunch and he wanted to see the Dinosaurs again. So, we did the dinos again, and then once more on the way out and it STILL wasn't enough for him! On the way out he kept asking for more dinos!

There are some portions of the floor that are 'glass' - it was hilarious to watch Javin tread as lightly as possible on it. He wouldn't walk in the middle, even when holding my hand, he had to hold onto the railing. It was SO funny!

Wednesday:

Duncan the Dancing Duck by Syd Hoff
Ducks Don't Wear Socks by John Nedwidek
One Duck Stuck by Phyllis Root (Liked it)
Duck by Randy Cecil

We feed the 'Ducks' at Liberty Park, there were 2 whole ducks, but the geese came in waves and even took the bread out of Javin's hand.

Thursday:

That Pesky Dragon by Julie Sykes (Liked it)
if i had a dragon by Tom & Amanda Ellery (Liked it)

We took a early morning trip to Banbury Cross and grabbed some Donuts! Mmm..Banbury, it doesn't help my addiction when I can smell them baking a block away.

First Bee sting :(
We also went to the Doctor for Javin's 3 year check up, as we were leaving he kept saying,"Wanna do doctor again!" What can I say, we have an AWESOME Pediatrician.

Friday:

We met up with Javin's friend Helene at the Children's Museum across from Temple Square, a cute little place they have up on the 2nd floor. Javin put on a skirt and Danced a little with Helene, then built some towers and Delighted in Destroying them.

The Start and End of C Week

Rrrr! I'm SO frustrated with this website right now! They have made a LOT of improvements and made it so much more user-friendly, but I save stuff and close it stupidly thinking that its going to save it and it doesn't. I've started C week 4 times now!!! I'm about to rip my hair out I'm so mad. Having said that I now give you the condensed version of C week:

Labor Day was the start of C week, but despite the 'day off', not a lot of teaching was done. I had jetBlue work and the library was closed, so we couldn't get our books for this week until Tuesday. We ended up talking about the sound that C makes, just the K-sound for now, we'll deal with the S- and CH- sounds later. We saw a Crane on the way out of the library and decided that it starts with C and also the Cars.

Some of Javin's favorite books this week were:
(Tuesday)
The Pirate Cruncher by Jonny Duddle (LOVED IT!!)
Clementine by Sebastian Loth (cute)

We ate Clementines, painted with Colors (in plastic Ziploc bags) and This sparked a Clown talk. I thought about making Cornbread, but that didn't happen.

(Wednesday)
The Caboose Who Got Loose by Bill Peet (LOVED IT!!)
Carrot Soup by John Segal (Has a Carrot Soup Recipe in the back!)
Crocs! by David T. Greenberg

We ate Cantaloupe and Carrots and looked at Clouds - we decided that most looked like bugs.

(Thursday)
The Berenstain Bears Clean House
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle (LOVED IT!!)
Clang! Clang! Beep! Beep! by Robert Burleigh
Cars Galore by Peter Stein

We Cleaned the house and ate Cheese and Crackers

(Friday)
If you Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Numeroff
Cat & Mouse by Ian Schoenherr
Ride 'em Cowboy by Kate McMullan

We talked about Clocks, Cats, Cows & Cowboys and made cookies.

(Saturday) we had another special C - CONCRETE! came to our house, for a patio!

I've also decided to just post weekly, I'm going to compile all week as I go and just post once weekly. I feel bad I can't keep up, but hopefully it'll be less stressful :)

Thursday

It seems like each day I get further and further behind. I'm barely getting the stuff done I need/want to. Which unfortunately includes updating everyone on the Preschool progress.

Thursday:
Since we had talked about Bees the day before at the zoo, we followed it up with Queen Bee Needs to be Free, I can't remember who it was written by. The book was a little too informative for Javin's taste, I had to add in some of my own commentary to keep his attention, but it was ok. For our snack I cooked up some Bacon and we had BLTs. My little carnivore was happy with that. We also talked about our Body parts that start with B (ie. Belly (Button), Back and Bum) and read The Belly Book by Fran Manushkin (great). Then we went along with the rest of the day, I quizzed him about which words start with A or B and if X word starts with B? Then we read Billy Twitters and His Blue Whale Problem by Mac Barnett (great, good illustration) before bed.

Friday:
Javin had (the usual) yogurt for breakfast, but I added some Blueberries in it and we read Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey (I thought it was slow, but Javin liked it). After breakfast we rushed over to the Bounce House place we go to on 700 W. and 1500-ish S., we met up with Javin's little friend, Lily, and her mom, Amanda. He spent a few wonderful hours ridding himself of the excess energy he has everyday. Then the time came for me to go to work, Javin spent some time at Tara and Kevin's (whom he ADORES).After work, we talked about SOME of the differences between Boys and girls (not the obvious ones - he's only 3 guys!) and read The Boy who was Raised by Librarians by Carla Morris (written by a local librarian in Provo, really good) and Boy by James Mayhew (just ok).  Then before bed we read Brave, Brave Mouse by Michelle Cartlidge (also, good).

The B week ran into Saturday this week because it was Javin's Birthday! We found a well taken care of Big Boy Bike on KSL and ran out to West Jordan to pick it up. He doesn't quiet know what to think about it yet, he can't really keep his feet on the pedals. He wants to ride it, but he doesn't like it when he's on it because we have to hold him up and he can't go very fast, poor kid :(
